HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5049
Celebrating the life of H. Wallace Sinaiko.

WHEREAS, H. Wallace Sinaiko, a retired psychologist with the Smithsonian Institution who took an active role in community affairs, died on April 25, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of Minnesota raised in New Jersey, H. Wallace “Wally” Sinaiko graduated from Columbia High School before proudly serving at the United States Merchant Marine Academy as a Cadet-Midshipman in 1943; and

WHEREAS, Wally Sinaiko returned to his home state to receive a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology at the University of Minnesota, where he also met his wife, Muriel; and

WHEREAS, the young couple embarked on their life together in New Jersey, raising small children as Wally Sinaiko received a doctorate at New York University; and

WHEREAS, Wally Sinaiko’s distinguished professional career included research at the University of Illinois, New York University, and the Naval Research Laboratory in addition to service as a staff scientist with the Institute for Defense Analyses and a liaison scientist with the European Branch, Office of Naval Research in London; and

WHEREAS, respected for his intellectual insights, Wally Sinaiko spent over two decades at the Smithsonian Institution as the program director for Manpower Research and Advisory Services, publishing over 70 technical papers while also authoring chapters for and editing four books; and

WHEREAS, during retirement, Wally Sinaiko took an active role in political and civic endeavors, volunteering as a reading teacher for underserved children and enthusiastically supporting a local candidate for state office; and

WHEREAS, a man of many interests, Wally Sinaiko was a longtime member of the Cosmos Club; enjoyed cycling, hiking, canoeing, photography, and travel; and created many wonderful and cherished memories with his wife as they visited the United States, Europe, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife, Muriel, Wally Sinaiko will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his children, Alex, Andy, and Ellen and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, H. Wallace Sinaiko; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of H. Wallace Sinaiko as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
