Celebrating the life of Jane Elizabeth Martin Givens.

WHEREAS, Jane Elizabeth Martin Givens, a vibrant and compassionate woman who dedicated herself to serving her beloved hometown of Newport News, died on July 12, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Newport News High School, Jane Givens married the late Otho Givens in 1939 and embarked on a life marked by service to her family, church, and community; and

WHEREAS, while raising three sons, Jane Givens took an active role in the parent-teacher associations of Hilton Elementary School and Warwick High School, serving in various leadership positions and working to promote positive interactions to benefit the students of both schools; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and cheerful volunteer at Riverside Hospital for almost three decades, Jane Givens held offices in local, regional, and state hospital auxiliary organizations, including president of the Virginia Association of Hospital Auxiliaries; and

WHEREAS, Jane Givens volunteered at the Virginia Living Museum in 1991 and was a well-known figure at The Mariners’ Museum, where she generously gave of her time and talents for 17 years in the gift shop, library, and marketing department; and

WHEREAS, a woman of tremendous spirit and vitality, Jane Givens decided at 89 years of age to expand her community service experience through involvement in a local candidate’s political campaign for state office; and

WHEREAS, a hallmark of Jane Givens’ life was her faith, which she nurtured through her affiliation with Trinity Methodist Church, First Christian Church, and for 57 years, Hilton Christian Church; and

WHEREAS, an inspiration to many, Jane Givens lived a full and accomplished life in service to those around her; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband of more than six decades, Otho, Jane Givens will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, O. Martin Givens, David S. Givens, and Steven Y. Givens and their families; numerous other family members and friends; and the individuals whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired civic supporter and outstanding citizen of the Commonwealth, Jane Elizabeth Martin Givens; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jane Elizabeth Martin Givens as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
