2011 SPECIAL SESSION I
11200155DWHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Cecil Wray Page, Jr., United States Army Retired, of Gloucester, who served his country with great distinction and devotion and made many valuable contributions to his hometown, died on April 16, 2011; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of the United States Military Academy in West Point, Cecil “Wray” Page attended Virginia Military Institute for his first year and several years later received a master’s degree from the Army Comptrollership School at Syracuse University in addition to graduating from the Army Field Artillery School and U.S. Army Command and General Staff College among others; and
WHEREAS, an admired military officer, Wray Page served as part of the Signal and Field Artillery Corps, leading troops at Okinawa during World War II and the Korean War, earning a Bronze Star in each war for his heroism; and
WHEREAS, Wray Page’s exemplary military career included service in Germany as the Commander of the first Hawk Missile Battalion in Europe and at Fort Leavenworth, where he taught at the Department of Joint Combined and Special Operations, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and authored a text on war gaming; and
WHEREAS, Wray Page entered civilian life after retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, becoming a comptroller at the Continental Can Company and International Telephone and Telegraph while also maintaining his military affiliation as a recruiter for the United States Military Academy; and
WHEREAS, Wray Page also served as a professor and head of the business department at the College of St. Joseph before relocating back to “Shelly,” his family home in Gloucester County, where he became actively involved in the local community; and
WHEREAS, Wray Page was an enthusiastic local historian who founded the Page-Nelson Society of Virginia, volunteered at the Rosewell Foundation, and was a member of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities in addition to being a popular speaker on Gloucester and Middle Peninsula history; and
WHEREAS, a devoted alumnus, Wray Page remained involved in West Point and Virginia Military Institute activities throughout his life and was a lifelong member of Abingdon Episcopal Church while often attending St. James Anglican Church services as well; and
WHEREAS, a man of integrity and honor, Wray Page served his community and country with great distinction and pride; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Nina, Wray Page will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Nina, Anne, and John and their families, and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the loss of a great soldier and outstanding Virginian, Lieutenant Colonel Cecil Wray Page, Jr., USA (Ret.); and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant Colonel Cecil Wray Page, Jr., USA (Ret.) as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
