Celebrating the life of Harry Benjamin Sedwick, Jr.

WHEREAS, Harry Benjamin Sedwick, Jr., an admired business leader and pillar of the Orange County community, died on April 5, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of Orange County, Harry Benjamin “H.B.” Sedwick graduated from Roanoke Business College and joined countless other young men of his generation by enlisting in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, H.B. Sedwick soon transferred to the United States Army Air Corps and proudly served his country as a navigator on a B-24 stationed in England during World War II before returning to Orange County, where he married Hazel Shirley Utz; and

WHEREAS, the young couple decided to fulfill their entrepreneurial ambitions by opening a restaurant business with another local resident before starting a construction business in the 1950s; and

WHEREAS, a highly successful businessman, H.B. Sedwick built more than 350 quality private homes and numerous schools and commercial buildings throughout Orange, Culpeper, Madison, and Charlottesville to meet the needs of the growing population and was particularly proud of the Orange County Nursing Home; and

WHEREAS, H.B. Sedwick played a vital role in local efforts to promote Orange County’s business community, serving as a member and past president of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce and as the founding member and past president of the Orange County economic development committee; and

WHEREAS, devoted to serving his fellow residents, H.B. Sedwick was a charter member and past president of the Orange Lions Club, where he had 50 years of perfect attendance; and

WHEREAS, H.B. Sedwick also generously gave of his time and talents to the Orange American Legion Post 156, Trinity United Methodist Church, the Orange County Rescue Squad, and sports at Booster Park; and

WHEREAS, known for his friendly demeanor and kind heart, H.B. Sedwick made countless contributions to his beloved Orange County over the course of his life, leaving behind a legacy of service, integrity, and good will; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Hazel, H.B. Sedwick will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Benny, Steve, and Rod and their families, including eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; numerous other family members and friends; and fellow Orange County residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected business leader and beloved community supporter, Harry Benjamin Sedwick, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Harry Benjamin Sedwick, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
