WHEREAS, the University of Richmond men’s basketball team capped a spectacular season by making it to the coveted National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Sweet 16 for the second time in the program’s history; and
WHEREAS, the Spiders, led by seniors Kevin Anderson, Justin Harper, Dan Geriot, Kevin Smith, and Kevin Hovde, dominated their opponents during regular season play, ending the season with a 29 - 8 record; and
WHEREAS, the University of Richmond men’s basketball team defeated the University of Rhode Island and then Temple University before playing the University of Dayton in the Atlantic 10 championship game; and
WHEREAS, the University of Richmond started off with a three pointer that was matched by the Dayton Flyers but the Spiders retook the lead with an 8 - 0 run and held the Flyers to 54 points to take home its first Atlantic 10 championship and secure its second straight NCAA bid; and
WHEREAS, a No. 12 seed, the University of Richmond men’s basketball team faced No. 5 seed Vanderbilt University in the second round of the NCAA tournament, where the Spiders triumphed over the Commodores by a score of 69 - 66; and
WHEREAS, the University of Richmond men’s basketball team then turned their attention to battling Morehead State University in the third round of the NCAA tournament; the determination and skill of the Spiders propelled them to victory and into the Sweet 16; and
WHEREAS, the Spiders faced No. 1 seed Kansas in San Antonio to end their amazing 2010 - 2011 season that included having the most wins as the No. 12 seed in NCAA tournament history, its first Atlantic 10 championship, and the most wins in school history; and
WHEREAS, key to the resounding success of the University of Richmond Spiders was the team’s tenacious spirit, the skilled leadership of Head Coach Chris Mooney, and the support of the University of Richmond community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the University of Richmond men’s basketball team for its triumphant season and appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Chris Mooney as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s hard work and winning spirit.
