WHEREAS, United States Air Force Airman First Class Zachary Ryan Cuddeback of Stanardsville died on March 2, 2011, while serving his country in Germany; and
WHEREAS, born into a military family, Zachary “Zac” Cuddeback made several locations home as he grew up, becoming an avid St. Louis Blues and Rams fan while living in O’Fallon, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Zac Cuddeback eventually moved to Virginia, where he continued his love for ice hockey at the Charlottesville Ice Park and graduated from William Monroe High School in 2008; and
WHEREAS, Zac Cuddeback went on to attend Old Dominion University, playing on the Monarchs club ice hockey team, becoming a proud member of Kappa Delta Rho fraternity, and making many devoted friends; and
WHEREAS, Zac Cuddeback decided to follow in his family’s footsteps by serving his country in the armed forces; in July 2009, he joined the United States Air Force on delayed entry and entered basic training in September 2009; and
WHEREAS, after completion of basic training, Airman First Class Cuddeback received advanced individual training as a vehicle operator at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, graduating in January 2010; and
WHEREAS, Airman First Class Cuddeback returned to Charlottesville as a hometown recruiter in February 2010 before he reported to duty on his first assignment with the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron at Ramstein Air Base in Germany in March 2010; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated soldier, Airman First Class Cuddeback took great pride in his military service and fulfilled his duties with enthusiasm and attention to detail; and
WHEREAS, on March 2, 2011, Airman First Class Cuddeback was one of two soldiers killed when a gunman opened fire at Frankfurt International Airport; he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Air Force Commendation Medal; and
WHEREAS, a spirited and loving young man who lived by the motto of Honor Super Omnia (Honor Above All Things), Zac Cuddeback leaves behind many wonderful memories for his mother, Celia; father, Bob; brother, Tim; fellow soldiers; and many friends to cherish; and
WHEREAS, Airman First Class Cuddeback’s death is a solemn reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Airman First Class Zachary Ryan Cuddeback; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Airman First Class Zachary Ryan Cuddeback as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
