WHEREAS, George E. Lovelace served the Town of Vienna with great distinction as a member of the Town Council from 1982 to 1996 and again from 2003 until his retirement in 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Indiana, George Lovelace earned a bachelor’s degree from Lincoln University and a master’s degree from George Washington University; he also attended the Command and General Staff College; and

WHEREAS, George Lovelace proudly served his country for 20 years as a member of the United States Army Signal Corps, retiring as a lieutenant colonel before holding several management positions and serving as an IT consultant; and

WHEREAS, George Lovelace moved to Vienna in 1975 and quickly became involved in local civic life, cofounding the Malcolm-Windover Heights Civic Association a year later and serving on local planning commissions; and

WHEREAS, elected to the Vienna Town Council in 1982, George Lovelace dedicated his time and energy to serving his fellow residents and preserving Vienna’s unique residential character; and

WHEREAS, a respected community leader, George Lovelace ably represented the town council on numerous local boards and commissions while working to ensure an efficient and effective local government that met the needs of the burgeoning population; and

WHEREAS, in 1996, George Lovelace ran for and was elected to a term in the Virginia House of Delegates, becoming the first African American to represent Northern Virginia since Reconstruction; and

WHEREAS, following his state term, George Lovelace was elected again to the Vienna Town Council, continuing his meritorious service there while contributing his expertise as member of the Fairfax County Small Business Commission and as an at-large member of the Fairfax County Park Authority Board; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated public servant, George Lovelace has selflessly served the Town of Vienna, the Commonwealth, and his country with great distinction; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend George E. Lovelace for his exemplary public service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to George E. Lovelace as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his commitment to the residents of Vienna and the Commonwealth.
