SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 366
Celebrating the life of Mae Ernestine Hamlin Scott.

WHEREAS, Mae Ernestine Hamlin Scott of Newport News, a beloved mother, educator, and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, died on November 25, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Mae Scott was born on November 28, 1920, to loving parents Valentin C. Hamlin and Amelia R. Hamlin and was one of two siblings; and

WHEREAS, educated in the Raleigh, North Carolina, public school system and at Palmer Memorial Institute, Mae Scott was a talented athlete and won two national junior championships in tennis before the sport was integrated; and

WHEREAS, eager to continue her education, Mae Scott attended Virginia State College and Fisk University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology; she then earned a master’s degree in public health education from the University of Michigan and Western Reserve University; and

WHEREAS, upon her graduation, Mae Scott returned to North Carolina and worked as the North Carolina State Advisor on Negro Health Education for the Negro Division of the National Youth Administration; and

WHEREAS, on July 5, 1942, Mae Scott married the love of her life, Dr. C. Waldo Scott, and together they raised four wonderful children upon whom they impressed the importance of education, respect, and integrity; and

WHEREAS, Mae Scott moved with her husband to Cleveland, Ohio, and the District of Columbia as he continued his medical training, while she worked at the Family Health Association in Cleveland and was a substitute teacher in the District of Columbia Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, in 1948, the couple moved to Newport News, where Mae Scott volunteered as a Boy Scout den mother and Girl Scout board member in addition to supporting the Pirates Little League baseball team where her children played; and

WHEREAS, after her youngest child started school, Mae Scott began her exemplary 22-year career as an educator for Newport News Public Schools, where she was an innovative instructor and encouraged her students to excel in all their endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Mae Scott taught science classes at Huntington High School, Walter Reed Elementary School, Huntington Annex, Newport News High School, Newport News Intermediate School, where she served as chair of the department, and Dunbar Middle School; and

WHEREAS, committed to her profession, Mae Scott was also active in the Newport News and Virginia Education Associations; and

WHEREAS, while a career in education afforded Mae Scott the opportunity to formally educate those around her, she was respected throughout her life for her calm spirit, wise words, and gracious mentoring; and

WHEREAS, Mae Scott was an active member of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church; Platinum member of the Newport News Chapter of The Links, Inc., where she was a founding member and first president; and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Mae Scott dedicated herself to serving others and received numerous awards and accolades for her community service, including a proclamation from the City of Newport News that she received on her birthday; and

WHEREAS, Mae Scott will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her loving children, Charles W. Scott, Jr.; United States Representative Robert “Bobby” C. Scott; Dr. Jon L. Scott and his wife, Shirley; and Valerie Price and her husband, Newport News Mayor Dr. McKinley Price; her wonderful grandchildren and other loving relatives; and her many friends and numerous admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved mother, educator, and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Mae Ernestine Hamlin Scott; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mae Ernestine Hamlin Scott as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
