HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 954
Commending the Honorable Benjamin N.A. Kendrick.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Benjamin N.A. Kendrick, esteemed citizen of the Commonwealth, has served over 25 years as a Judge of the Circuit Court of Arlington County; and

WHEREAS, Judge Kendrick was raised in Willoughby Spit in the City of Norfolk, attended the University of Richmond, and graduated from Old Dominion University, all in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and received his juris doctorate from Howard University in 1968; and

WHEREAS, Judge Kendrick engaged in private law practice until 1985, during which time he became one of the Commonwealth’s leading criminal trial lawyers, including serving as counsel on a number of capital cases; and

WHEREAS, Judge Kendrick was recognized for his skill by the Arlington Bar Association, whose members in 1984 recommended his nomination as Judge of the Circuit Court of Arlington County; and

WHEREAS, Judge Kendrick was nominated by Senator Edward M. Holland, Senator Clive L. DuVal, Delegate James F. Almand, Delegate Mary A. Marshall, and Delegate Warren G. Stambaugh to be a Judge of the Circuit Court of Arlington County, and appointed by the Virginia General Assembly to that position on March 15, 1985; and

WHEREAS, Judge Kendrick has heard tens of thousands of cases in Arlington County and the City of Falls Church, including precedent-setting cases as to the admissibility of DNA evidence; and

WHEREAS, Judge Kendrick was recognized for his skill as a jurist and twice reappointed as Judge of the Circuit Court of Arlington County; and

WHEREAS, Judge Kendrick has served as a teacher and mentor to his law clerks and numerous other Virginia lawyers, and his positive influence will continue for decades as many of them now serve as leaders of the legal profession in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, throughout his life, Judge Kendrick has given generously of his time and immense talents to countless professional, civic, and state organizations, including the American Legion and the Masons; and

WHEREAS, Judge Kendrick is a six-time finisher of the Ironman Triathlon and a three-time finisher of the Marine Corps Marathon, and enjoys golf and tennis at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington County; and

WHEREAS, Judge Kendrick’s greatest delight remains his family, including his wife, Robin; and his children, Courtney and Benjamin, and their families; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Honorable Benjamin N.A. Kendrick for his dedication to Virginia’s judicial system, his profession, and the people of Arlington County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Benjamin N.A. Kendrick as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his longtime public service.
