HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 904
Commending Megan P. Lawless.

WHEREAS, Megan P. Lawless, an extremely accomplished young lady from Haymarket, was selected as the 2011 Miss American Sweetheart at the National Miss American Coed Pageant held in Lake Buena Vista, Florida; and

WHEREAS, American Coed Pageants, Inc., a national scholarship program, recognizes and rewards young people for their achievements while promoting self-esteem and confidence; and

WHEREAS, Megan Lawless competed in the national competition after being selected as the 2010 Miss Virginia American Sweetheart at the state event, where she received the talent award for her vocal performance; and

WHEREAS, at the national competition, Megan Lawless won the title for best interview and was first runner-up in the national academic achievement category and third runner-up in the national talent category; and

WHEREAS, Megan Lawless has also been selected as the 2011 Miss Virginia Dogwood Outstanding Preteen and will compete for the title of Miss Virginia Outstanding Preteen at the Miss America affiliated competition in June; and

WHEREAS, a hardworking and well-rounded student in Prince William County Public Schools, Megan Lawless is a straight-A student in the gifted education program who is a member of the all-county chorus and serves as a student council association representative; and

WHEREAS, an accomplished swimmer, Megan Lawless has participated in the Prince William Swim League, Potomac Valley Swimming, and Speedo Tom Dolan Invitational in numerous events, including the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, and 100-meter backstroke; and

WHEREAS, Megan Lawless has been an active volunteer in the community through numerous organizations, participating in Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children’s “Every Kid's a Rock Star!” benefit; reading to children at SERVE, a Manassas-based community organization; and giving fire safety information at the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company 501 Open House; and

WHEREAS, an exceptionally poised, gracious, and intelligent young lady, Megan Lawless is well qualified to represent the Commonwealth and nation as the 2011 Miss American Sweetheart; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Megan P. Lawless on her well-deserved selection as the 2011 Miss American Sweetheart; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Megan P. Lawless as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for her many accomplishments and commitment to serving her community.
