HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 899 Offered February 16, 2011 Celebrating the life of Earl Augustine Robinson. ----------

WHEREAS, Earl Augustine Robinson, a neighborhood advocate and historian, and beloved resident of the Fulton area in Richmond, died on February 1, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Earl Robinson was a vocal supporter of the Fulton area; he took great pride in the group of neighborhoods that developed east of the James River across from Williamsburg Road; and

WHEREAS, a local historian, Earl Robinson celebrated Fulton’s historical significance to Richmond and the Commonwealth, including the sites where the Powhatan leader, Parahunt, greeted Christopher Newport and John Smith and where President Abraham Lincoln disembarked from his boat after Richmond fell during the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, eager to share his knowledge with others, Earl Robinson was proud that Fulton was the birthplace of Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., the first African American to command a United States Navy ship and fleet; and

WHEREAS, for decades after the City of Richmond attempted an urban renewal program in Fulton Bottom, Earl Robinson continued to live in his single story, brick home as one of the neighborhood’s last remaining occupants; and

WHEREAS, Earl Robinson was a dedicated and active advocate for Fulton, envisioning a memorial for the neighborhood that would encompass the community’s important place in history and underscore the contributions made by its residents over the centuries; and

WHEREAS, respected by the many members of his community who shared his vision, Earl Robinson was famous for his love of music, history, and the Fulton neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, Earl Robinson will be fondly remembered by his children, Angela, Leonard, Derrick, and Christopher, his five grandchildren, and the many family members, friends, and Fulton supporters who knew him; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Earl Augustine Robinson, neighborhood advocate and historian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Earl Augustine Robinson as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
