2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Mark Sackett sustained serious injuries from an improvised explosive device on October 10, 2010, while serving his country in Helmand Province, Afghanistan; and
WHEREAS, as a student at James Wood High School, Mark Sackett enjoyed playing soccer and was awarded the senior superlative for “most energetic”; and
WHEREAS, Mark Sackett enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October 2008 and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, a platoon squad automatic weapon gunner, Corporal Sackett was on patrol when an improvised explosive device detonated, fracturing his right hand; shattering his right tibia, fibula, and heel; and creating multiple shrapnel wounds; and
WHEREAS, after initial treatment at a military field hospital, Corporal Sackett was transported to Ramstein Air Base in Germany before being flown to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Sackett has undergone more than a dozen surgeries, while facing the threat of infection and secondary illnesses, and still needs extensive physical and occupational therapy; and
WHEREAS, a determined young man, Corporal Sackett has displayed the great courage and fortitude evidenced by millions of other soldiers who willingly place themselves in harm’s way for the love of country; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and honor Lance Corporal Mark Sackett for his meritorious service on behalf of a grateful Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lance Corporal Mark Sackett as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his distinguished service to the nation and the Commonwealth and best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
