Celebrating the life of Susan Lowell Butler.

WHEREAS, Susan Lowell Butler, a well-loved community activist and resident of Alexandria, died on December 18, 2010; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to creating a supportive work environment for professional women, Susan Butler joined the National Education Association (NEA) as the director of communications at the age of 29 and wrote publications on the history of the NEA, the role of women within the NEA, and the NEA’s involvement in the class rights struggles of the 1960s and 1970s; and

WHEREAS, committed to meeting the needs and celebrating the accomplishments of women, Susan Butler later served as the chief executive officer of Women in Communication before heading the National Women’s Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, after moving to Alexandria in 1988, Susan Butler served multiple terms as the chair of the Alexandria Commission for Women and established Friends of the Alexandria Commission for Women, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money for programs assisting women and children; and

WHEREAS, harnessing her great philanthropic energies, Susan Butler raised funds and awareness for cancer research, cancer care, ending domestic violence and abuse, and programs for women and children through the annual Alexandria Breast Cancer Walk and Women’s Art Party events; and

WHEREAS, Susan Butler researched and authored a women’s history walking tour of Old Town Alexandria to promote the great contributions of women in her adopted city; and

WHEREAS, as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Cancer Center, and the NIH Clinical Center, Susan Butler served on patient advisory panels, wrote and presented on the patient perspective in cancer treatment, and served as President Obama’s patient escort at NIH in 2009; and

WHEREAS, as one of the founders of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance and as the executive director of the D.C. Cancer Coalition, Susan Butler devoted her energies to counseling hundreds of women across the nation and to securing millions of dollars in funding to assist in screening, education, transportation, and direct assistance for ovarian cancer patients; and

WHEREAS, Susan Butler will be greatly missed by her supportive husband, James, and her stepsons, James, Kevin, and Michael; and she will be remembered as a friend and advocate by all who had the good fortune to know her; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of the well-loved community activist, Susan Lowell Butler; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Susan Lowell Butler as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
