HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 730
Commending the Gretna High School softball team.

WHEREAS, the 2010 Gretna High School softball team completed an outstanding season by defeating Holston High School (5 - 1) to claim the Group A state title; and

WHEREAS, on the way to the championship game, the Gretna High School Lady Hawks defeated Region A champion Mathews High School and Region D runner-up Virginia High School; and

WHEREAS, before an enthusiastic crowd at Radford University, the Gretna High School Lady Hawks (18 - 7) dominated Holston High School (24 - 3), beginning with two runs in the first inning and continuing to the final strikeout pitch; and

WHEREAS, Brittnie Cooke, Keri Holt, Monica Kennedy, Nikki Bowler, and Ashley Vasser all reached home plate, while Nichole Mills allowed only two hits during the final six innings and finished the game with four strikeouts; and

WHEREAS, the entire team worked hard and contributed throughout the entire season following Coach Brooks’ motto of “solid pitching, a good defense, and timely hits”; and

WHEREAS, the championship win marks the second state championship in three seasons by Gretna High School; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Lady Hawks is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Ketina Brooks; and the tremendous support of the parents, students, and faculty of Gretna High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Gretna High School softball team for winning the 2010 Virginia High School League Group A state softball championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Ketina Brooks as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the Gretna High School softball team’s 2010 championship performance.
