WHEREAS, Lt. Colonel John F. McDonnell, USAF Retired, of Mount Vernon, a brave veteran and beloved citizen of the Commonwealth, died on November 2, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Peabody, Massachusetts, John “Jack” McDonnell was born on April 15, 1916, the son of Irish immigrants; and

WHEREAS, a member of “The Greatest Generation,” Jack McDonnell proudly served his country during World War II, when he was stationed in England as a member of the 306th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force; and

WHEREAS, after valiantly serving his country, Jack McDonnell continued his exemplary military career and in 1951 married the love of his life, the late Emma Meiller, at Bolling Air Force Base; they had six wonderful children and enjoyed over 40 years of marriage; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong proponent of the value of education, Jack McDonnell received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of Maryland and was quite proud of his children when they graduated from college; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the United States Air Force in 1964 as a lieutenant colonel, Jack McDonnell continued to serve his country as he enjoyed a second successful career with the United States Naval Investigative Service; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his professional and family responsibilities, Jack McDonnell generously gave of his time and talents in the community as an active member of his local Catholic Church, charter member of the Mount Vernon Knights of Columbus, substitute teacher, and member of the Governor’s Board of Visitors of Mount Vernon; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong Notre Dame and Maryland fan, Jack McDonnell enjoyed sports, including coaching Little League baseball; and

WHEREAS, loved by his family and admired by his friends and colleagues, Jack McDonnell lived a life marked by exemplary service to his family, church, community, and country; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his son, Terrence, and wife, Emma, Jack McDonnell will be greatly missed by his five surviving children, Governor Bob McDonnell, Nancy Naisawald, Eileen Reinaman, Colonel Kenneth McDonnell, MD, Maureen Uncapher, and their families, including 15 grandchildren; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a brave veteran and beloved citizen of the Commonwealth, Lieutenant Colonel John F. McDonnell, USAF (Ret.); and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant Colonel John F. McDonnell, USAF (Ret.) as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
