11102545DWHEREAS, the Arlington County Commission on the Status of Women is commended for its visionary work on behalf of women in Arlington County; and
WHEREAS, established in 1974 as an advisory committee for the Arlington County Board, the committee was redesigned in 1980 as a permanent commission to advise the county on a variety of issues affecting women; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Commission on the Status of Women serves as a valuable resource and advocate for women in the community, providing information on legal and human rights, economic equality, equal employment, and state legislation; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Commission on the Status of Women advises other County advisory groups and the community on issues of concern to women through public forums, cooperative efforts with local women’s organizations, and workshops that address health, financial, and safety issues; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Commission on Women has supported state legislation to reactivate and fund the Virginia Commission on the Status of Women, increase penalties for stalking with a weapon, and reduce state sales tax on food; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Commission on Women also created its Women of Vision, formerly Person of Vision, awards to recognize and honor community members who demonstrate a strong commitment to women’s issues; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Commission on Women performs its many duties through gracious and hard-working volunteer members who serve for three-year terms; and
WHEREAS, for more than three decades, the Arlington County Commission on Women has successfully served as a resource, advocate, and advisor concerning women’s issues in Arlington County and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Arlington County Commission on the Status of Women for its visionary work on behalf of women in Arlington County; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Samantha Sewell, Chair of the Arlington County Commission on the Status of Women, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and respect for the Commission’s commitment to serving the women of Arlington County and the Commonwealth.
