2011 SESSION
11101031DWHEREAS, the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team capped a perfect season (22 - 0) by winning the 2010 Group AA, Division 3 state championship; and
WHEREAS, on the way to the state championship, the Lady Pioneers won the Northwestern District championship and dominated the Fluvanna Flying Flucos 65 - 52 to win the Region II, Division 3 championship before defeating Warhill High School to advance to the championship game; and
WHEREAS, before an enthusiastic crowd at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center, the Lady Pioneers defeated Greensville County 49 - 38 in a come-from-behind thriller; and
WHEREAS, the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team had a slow start and trailed by 10 points in the second quarter but came back strong in the second half; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Pioneers were led by sophomore guard Courtni Green, who scored 31 points over the last 21 minutes to lead the team to victory; she also surpassed her 1,000th career point during the game; and
WHEREAS, the entire team—Stephanie Hernandez, Danielle Banks, Lisa Merriman, Ky Rooks, Sara Mead, Emily White, Courtni Green, Diauna Farrish, Brooke Borlie, Alisha Mobley, Olivia Mason, and Lacey Harris—worked hard and made significant contributions throughout the season and in the championship games; and
WHEREAS, Millbrook High School opened in 2003 and its first girls’ basketball season ended in a 1 - 22 record; Debby Sanders was brought in as head coach and in just six years has built the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team into a powerhouse; and
WHEREAS, Coach Sanders encouraged her team to create offensive opportunities and have a strong, high pressure defense; she took home numerous Coach of the Year awards, including Coach of the Year for Region II and AA State, Division 3; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2010 Lady Pioneers is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Coach Debby Sanders and her staff; and the support of the parents, student body, faculty, and administration of Millbrook High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team for winning the 2010 Group AA, Division 3 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Debby Sanders as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on the team’s stellar season and championship performance.
