WHEREAS, Alvin Wyman of Sterling is commended for his service to his country and community; and

WHEREAS, a native of Massachusetts, Alvin Wyman was educated in his home state, receiving two master’s degrees and a doctorate in international finance; and

WHEREAS, with the outbreak of the Korean War, Alvin Wyman joined the United States Air Force and received flight training in Texas to become a fighter pilot; and

WHEREAS, admired for his courageous and daring spirit, Alvin Wyman flew an F-86 Sabre jet fighter, and became known by the nickname of “Bear”; and

WHEREAS, Alvin Wyman shot down four enemy MiG-15 aircraft before his 189th mission, when he was shot down and became an “uninvited guest” of Chinese Communist soldiers for 15 days; he managed to escape despite the abuses he endured and returned to the U.S. military; and

WHEREAS, Alvin Wyman received numerous awards for his exemplary service, including two Silver Stars, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Purple Hearts, seven Air Medals, and a Prisoner of War Medal; and

WHEREAS, respected for his financial acumen, Alvin Wyman worked in various positions, including as the financial manager for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, where he oversaw the prime contractor’s 10,000 personnel as they constructed a multibillion-dollar military city for the late King Khalid in Saudi Arabia; and

WHEREAS, throughout a long and active life, Alvin Wyman has generously given of his time and talents in the community as a Mason, holding the positions of past Master, past President, and past Commander in various lodges; and

WHEREAS, Alvin Wyman is also a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Sons of the American Revolution, and Arlington-Fairfax Elks Lodge; and

WHEREAS, an immensely talented and compassionate man who has dedicated much of his life to serving others, Alvin Wyman fought bravely on behalf of his beloved country and continues to support other veterans and his fellow neighbors in the Northern Virginia area; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Alvin Wyman for his service to his country and community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Alvin Wyman as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his devotion to duty and commitment to service.
