Commending the Lake Taylor High School girls' basketball team.

WHEREAS, the Lake Taylor High School girls’ basketball team from Norfolk capped an outstanding season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AAA state basketball championship on March 12, 2010; and

WHEREAS, on its way to the state title, the Lake Taylor High School girls’ basketball team won a decisive victory over West Springfield High School (56 - 44) in the semifinal game of the state tournament; and

WHEREAS, before an enthusiastic crowd of 7,500 at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center, the Lady Titans defeated the Princess Anne High School girls’ basketball team 50 - 44 to take home the school’s first ever team state championship; and

WHEREAS, in an exciting game, the Lady Titans were led offensively by Linda Stepney who scored 17 points, while a strong defense put the pressure on the Princess Anne Lady Cavaliers; and

WHEREAS, the game was close throughout most of the first three quarters until Princess Anne pulled ahead by eight points; and

WHEREAS, the tenacious Lady Titans battled back and scored on eight of 10 possessions during a stretch in the third and fourth quarters to keep the lead for good; and

WHEREAS, the entire team worked hard and made significant contributions throughout the entire season and championship games under the leadership of Coach Sawyer, whose rigorous practices and standards prepared the team for state championship level play; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Lady Titans is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Coach Saundra Sawyer and her staff; and the support of the parents, student body, and faculty and leadership of Lake Taylor High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the girls’ basketball team from Lake Taylor High School on its outstanding season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Saundra Sawyer, head coach of the Lake Taylor High School girls’ basketball team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s championship performance.
