2009 SESSION
WHEREAS, Spottswood W. Robinson IV of Richmond, a respected citizen and attorney, who carried on his family's legacy of equal rights and justice for all Virginians, died on July 21, 2008; and
WHEREAS, Spottswood W. Robinson IV graduated from Armstrong High School, honorably served his country in the United States Air Force, and received a law degree from the Howard University School of Law; and
WHEREAS, after graduation, Spottswood W. Robinson IV joined the Richmond law firm of Hill, Tucker, and Marsh; and
WHEREAS, his father, the late Judge Spottswood W. Robinson III, along with Oliver W. Hill, Sr., argued one of the five cases that led to the United States Supreme Court's historic Brown v. Board of Education decision that struck down the doctrine of "separate but equal" in public education; the elder Robinson prominently appears as one of the 18 figures honored in the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial sculpture by Stanley Bleifeld on the grounds of Virginia's Capitol in Richmond; and
WHEREAS, Spottswood W. Robinson IV cherished and cared for his elderly parents in their later years and proudly preserved the Robinson family tradition that exemplified the fight for civil rights in the Commonwealth and the nation; and
WHEREAS, an avid outdoorsman, Spottswood W. Robinson IV also took great pleasure in his beloved City of Richmond, and he held a pilot's license and enjoyed flying, swimming, boating, and fishing; and
WHEREAS, Spottswood W. Robinson IV will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his devoted and loving family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginian, Spottswood W. Robinson IV; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Spottswood W. Robinson IV as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory and admiration for his many contributions to the Commonwealth and the nation in the areas of law and civil rights.
