2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, the congregation of Mosby Memorial Baptist Church in Richmond celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007; and
WHEREAS, Mosby Memorial Baptist Church was first established in 1907, when 252 members withdrew from Fifth Street Baptist Church in order to form their own church of worship; and
WHEREAS, the new members marched on a Sunday from the Odd Fellows Hall on East Franklin Street to Samaritan Hall, where they assembled as the New Baptist Church with the Reverend J. R. Griffin as their pastor, Thomas I. Beverly as moderator, and J. Henry Crutchfield as clerk; and
WHEREAS, the church grew in numbers and spirit and moved to St. Luke Hall, the Reverend A. E. Edwards joined the church as its second minister, Sophie Lemus served as the church’s first organist, and Richard Beverly became superintendent of the newly organized Sunday School; and
WHEREAS, the name of New Baptist Church was officially granted by the Baptist Council of Churches in 1909; and
WHEREAS, in 1920 the Reverend T. J. Mosby joined the church and guided the congregation through many changes and improvements, serving with great skill and compassion until his death in 1923; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of the Reverend J. A. Brinkley, the church changed its name to Clay Street Baptist Church and the congregation purchased and moved to the former Randolph Street Baptist Church in 1925; and
WHEREAS, in 1927 the church again changed its name to Mosby Memorial Baptist Church, in memory of the congregation’s former beloved pastor, the Reverend T. J. Mosby; and
WHEREAS, Mosby Memorial Baptist Church has been served by many fine ministers, including the Reverends Howard A. Chubbs, Emmett C. Burns, Ollie B. Wells, Berkeley Jones, and Joseph Godfrey, and inspirational interim pastor Dr. Edward Daniel McCreary, who all guided the congregation in worship and fellowship; and
WHEREAS, in 1992 the Reverend Barry T. Young joined Mosby Memorial Baptist Church, and during his 15 years of superb leadership, the church has enjoyed a revival, as well as substantial growth and improvements to the church and its missions, and he and his wife, the Reverend Dr. Mary Hunter Young, and their daughter Jessica have provided the congregation with joy and inspiration; and
WHEREAS, Mosby Memorial Baptist Church has been served throughout its 100-year history by immensely dedicated and able pastors, who have provided visionary leadership, devout worship, meaningful Christian education, and enthusiastic ministry and community missions; and
WHEREAS, throughout its long history, Mosby Memorial Baptist Church has provided its devoted congregation, its neighbors, and the community a place to worship, to help others, and to grow in faith and service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Mosby Memorial Baptist Church on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mosby Memorial Baptist Church as an expression of the General Assembly's best wishes for a joyful celebration and future success in its ministry.
