058324740WHEREAS, United States Army Second Lieutenant Leonard M. Cowherd III, a resident of Culpeper County, was killed in action in Iraq on May 16, 2004; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Culpeper County and a graduate of Wakefield Country Day School in Rappahannock County, Leonard Cowherd was a 2003 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point; and
WHEREAS, commissioned a second lieutenant following graduation from West Point, Leonard Cowherd was sent to Fort Knox, Kentucky, for five months of tank training, where he graduated third in his class; and
WHEREAS, deployed first to Germany on January 1, 2004, Lieutenant Cowherd was assigned to Iraq in late January as part of the Army's Company C, 1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division; and
WHEREAS, a platoon leader, Lieutenant Cowherd was in charge of four tanks and 16 troops; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Cowherd was leading his platoon in the Iraqi city of Karbala when he was killed by sniper fire while securing the area near the Mukhayam Mosque; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Cowherd's death is a reminder of the hazards faced daily by the thousands of young Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Lieutenant Leonard M. Cowherd III; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant Leonard M. Cowherd III as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
