HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5006 Commending the Forest Park High School girls' basketball team.

WHEREAS, the Bruins of Forest Park High School capped a record-setting season by capturing the 2004 Virginia High School League Group AAA state girls' basketball championship; and

WHEREAS, the Forest Park Bruins, who finished with a record of 26–3, earned their first state basketball title by defeating a strong team from Woodrow Wilson High School of Portsmouth, 59–51; and

WHEREAS, the Forest Park Bruins relied on their consistently strong defense to win the tournament, rallying from a third-quarter deficit, forcing 22 turnovers, and dominating the fourth quarter in the title game; and

WHEREAS, from Prince William County, the Forest Park Bruins defeated James Madison High School, 46–36, in the state quarterfinals and Indian River High School, 68–55, in the semifinals to advance to the state title game; and

WHEREAS, led by Courtney Portell, who scored 11 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter; Monica Wright, who led the defense with nine steals to go with her 12 points; and Ashleigh Braxton, who added 13 points, the Bruins wore down their opponents to emerge victorious; and

WHEREAS, Forest Park's triumph is a tribute to the leadership of Head Coach Christina Kelly and her staff, the talent and hard work of the players, and the enthusiastic support of the students, faculty, and supporters of Forest Park High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Bruins of Forest Park High School on the unprecedented success of their 2003–2004 basketball season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Christina Kelly as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the Forest Park High School girls' basketball team.
