HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 49
Commending Arab Americans in Virginia.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 20, 2003

WHEREAS, the rich history and tradition of Arab culture has contributed to western civilization in science, medicine, mathematics, geography, and architecture; and

WHEREAS, Arab Americans have made, and continue to make, valuable contributions to all aspects of American life since October 1854, when the first recorded Arab immigrant arrived in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Arab-American values, which emphasize higher education, hard work and productivity, have resulted in their contributions to the American and Virginia economies as doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, computer programmers, and entrepreneurs; and

WHEREAS, Arab Americans are followers of two of the three great monotheistic religions: Christianity and Islam; and

WHEREAS, members of the Arab-American community have served with distinction in the armed forces of the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth's Arab-American and Muslim communities, some of which date back more than a century, comprise an integral part of the fabric of our state, add to the diversity of our community, and contribute to the richness of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Arab Americans in Virginia be hereby commended; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the House of Delegates encourage the citizens of the Commonwealth to reflect on the unique and invaluable contributions of Virginia's Arab-American community.
