WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists launched an inexcusable attack on the United States, causing great destruction and horrible human suffering in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, the attack had a devastating effect in Virginia, home of the Pentagon and of many of the personnel, military and civilian, who served there; and

WHEREAS, among the victims of the Pentagon attack was Commander Robert Edward Dolan of Fairfax, a 20-year veteran of service in the United States Navy and the former commander of the USS John Hancock; and

WHEREAS, during his long and distinguished career in the Navy, Commander Dolan served in Bahrain, the Arabian Gulf, the Adriatic Sea, and the Mediterranean before joining the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the mid-1990s; and

WHEREAS, a native of Florham Park, New Jersey, Commander Dolan was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy who later earned his master's degree from the National War College; and

WHEREAS, Commander Dolan, married and the father of two children, was a devoted family man, coaching his son's Little League team and chaperoning his daughter at school dances; and

WHEREAS, among numerous commendations, Commander Dolan was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Commander Robert Edward Dolan, a victim of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Commander Robert Edward Dolan as an expression of the heartfelt condolences of the General Assembly of Virginia.
