SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 163
On the death of Commander Robert Allan Schlegel.

WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists launched an inexcusable attack on the United States, causing great destruction and horrible human suffering in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, the attack had a devastating effect in Virginia, home of the Pentagon and of many of the personnel, military and civilian, who served there; and

WHEREAS, among the victims of the Pentagon attack was Commander Robert Allan Schlegel of Alexandria, a 15-year veteran of service in the United States Navy and the deputy current operations and plans branch head for the Chief of Naval Operations; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Washington and Lee University, Commander Schlegel earned his master's degree from Old Dominion University, was a recipient of the Naval War College diploma, and resided in the Hampton Roads area for nearly 15 years; and

WHEREAS, during his long and distinguished career in the Navy, Commander Schlegel served aboard the USS Spartanburg County, the USS Harry E. Yarnell, the USS Scott, and the USS Arthur W. Radford, on which he served as executive officer; and

WHEREAS, among his many decorations, Commander Schlegel earned the Purple Heart, a Meritorious Service Medal, four Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; and

WHEREAS, Commander Schlegel was a proud part of a Navy family, as his father and two of his brothers also served in the United States Navy; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Commander Robert Allan Schlegel, a victim of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Commander Robert Allan Schlegel as an expression of the heartfelt condolences of the General Assembly of Virginia.
