2002 SESSION
WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists launched a violent attack on the United States, causing great destruction and horrible human suffering in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the attack had a devastating effect in Virginia, home of the Pentagon and of many of the personnel, military and civilian, who served there; and
WHEREAS, among the victims of the Pentagon attack were Wilson F. Flagg and Darlene E. Flagg of the Clarke County community of Millwood, who were passengers on American Airlines Flight 77 when it crashed into the Pentagon; and
WHEREAS, both native Californians, Wilson "Bud" Flagg and Darlene "Dee" Flagg were high school sweethearts who married in 1961 after Wilson Flagg graduated from the United States Naval Academy; and
WHEREAS, Darlene Flagg was a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and taught school in Annapolis while her husband-to-be attended the United States Naval Academy; and
WHEREAS, Wilson Flagg went to the Pensacola, Florida, flight school, became a Navy pilot, served three tours of duty in Southeast Asia, and earned a Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and Navy Commendation Medal; and
WHEREAS, after retiring from active duty, Wilson Flagg followed dual careers as an American Airlines captain and an officer in the Naval Reserve, retiring from the Navy in 1995 as a rear admiral and from the airline in 1998; and
WHEREAS, Wilson and Darlene Flagg moved to Clarke County in the early 1990s, where they owned and operated Daybreak Farm in Millwood and were active, popular, and respected members of their community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of Wilson F. Flagg and Darlene E. Flagg, innocent victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Wilson F. Flagg and Darlene E. Flagg as an expression of the heartfelt condolences of the General Assembly of Virginia.
