WHEREAS, Asian/Pacific Americans, representing a wealth of languages, ethnicities, and cultural traditions, have enriched immeasurably the social and cultural diversity of the Commonwealth and the nation; and

WHEREAS, Asian/Pacific Americans are one of the fastest growing segments of the American population, increasing in number from fewer than 1.5 million in 1970 to more than 10.5 million in 2000; and

WHEREAS, Asian/Pacific Americans have succeeded in government, business, technology, and the arts, vastly enriching the cultural landscape of Virginia and the nation; and

WHEREAS, diversity is one of Virginia's greatest strengths, and recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of Asian/Pacific Americans emphasizes the importance of inclusion in the well-being of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, by proclamation, President George W. Bush proclaimed May 2001 as national Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate May, in 2002 and in each succeeding year, as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly urge the citizens of the Commonwealth to use this occasion to reflect on the manifold contributions of Asian/Pacific Americans to the success, richness, and prosperity of Virginia.
