2002 SESSION
WHEREAS, the 2001 Vienna American Little League major all-star baseball team experienced unprecedented success; and
WHEREAS, comprised of 11- and 12-year-old players from the Vienna American Little League, Will Broussard, Jason Farley, Michael Fecher, Peter Gadell, Ryan Goss, Arman Moniri, Michael Padgett, Andrew Schrock, Greg Smagin, Brian Smith, Brig Tison, Keith Werman, Ted Williams, Vince Zeiser, Coach Russ Pahl, Coach Jeff Benjamin, and Manager Bill Murphy competed successfully at the district, state, and regional levels; and
WHEREAS, the Vienna American all-stars, who were selected and began practice on June 15, 2001, entered the highly competitive District IV tournament on July 5, and opened with a 12-0 victory over Mason District; and
WHEREAS, the Vienna American all-stars dominated the A Bracket of the tournament, winning all seven of their games to qualify for the best-of-three playoff against the B Bracket winners from Vienna Colonial; and
WHEREAS, after dropping the first game of the playoff, the Vienna Americans came back strongly, defeating Vienna Colonial, 10-0 and 4-1, to qualify for the Virginia state tournament in Woodbridge with a record of 9-1; and
WHEREAS, against the best teams in Virginia, the Vienna American all-stars continued their excellent play, defeating teams from Norfolk, Portsmouth, Bridgewater, Chesterfield, and Charlottesville to capture the 2001 Virginia Little League state championship; and
WHEREAS, Vienna American's state title qualified the team for the Southeastern Regional Tournament in St. Petersburg, Florida, where Vienna American swept teams from South Carolina, Georgia, West Virginia, and North Carolina to finish the four-game round robin portion of the tournament undefeated; and
WHEREAS, Vienna American's season finally ended two games short of a trip to the Little League World Series with a 1-0 loss to Georgia in the regional semifinals; and
WHEREAS, the Vienna American all-stars finished their season with a record of 18-2 and outscored their opposition by a margin of 140 to 24; and
WHEREAS, with their talent, spirit, teamwork, and sportsmanship, the all-stars from Vienna American Little League brilliantly represented the Town of Vienna and the Commonwealth throughout the summer of 2001; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Vienna American Little League major all-star team on their 2001 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Manager Bill Murphy as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration of the outstanding success of the Vienna American all-stars.
