WHEREAS, on March 25, 1821, Greece began its struggle for independence from nearly four centuries of political domination by the Ottoman Empire; and

WHEREAS, nearly a decade later, the Hellenic Republic won its independence and has since joined with the United States and other nations in celebrating the form of government created by the ancient Greeks more than 2,000 years ago; and

WHEREAS, as the inventor of democracy and the home of much of the western world's greatest literature, art, and philosophy, the nation of Greece has profoundly influenced western civilization for more than two millennia; and

WHEREAS, it is entirely appropriate that Virginia, birthplace of American democracy, join with the United States and the other freedom-loving nations of the world in celebrating, at the turn of the millennium, the anniversary of the rebirth of democracy in the country where it was born; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate March 25, 2000, as Greek Independence Day in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly urge the citizens of the Commonwealth to observe this day by reflecting on the vital contributions of Greek culture and political thought to the liberty that Virginians today enjoy.
