971342196Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 18.2-309 of the Code of Virginia is amended and reenacted and that the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 18.2-308.7:1 as follows:
§ 18.2-308.7:1. Possession of handgun ammunition by persons under age of twenty-one.
It shall be unlawful for any person under the age of twenty-one to knowingly and intentionally possess ammunition that is suitable for use only in a handgun. Any person in possession of ammunition in violation of this section shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. This subsection shall not apply to the possession of such ammunition by a person under the age of twenty-one (i) when engaging in a sporting event or activity or (ii) in connection with circumstances set forth in subdivisions 1 through 4 of § 18.2-308.7.
§ 18.2-309. Furnishing certain weapons or ammunition to certain individuals; penalty.
A. If any person sells, barters, gives or furnishes, or causes to be sold, bartered, given or furnished, to any minor a dirk, switchblade knife or bowie knife, having good cause to believe him to be a minor, such person shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.
B. If any person sells, barters, gives or furnishes, or causes to be sold, bartered, given or furnished, to any minor a handgun, having good cause to believe him to be a minor, such person shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony. This subsection shall not apply to any transfer made between family members or for the purpose of engaging in a sporting event or activity.
C. If any person sells, barters, gives or furnishes, or causes to be sold, bartered, given or furnished, to any person under the age of twenty-one, ammunition that is suitable for use only in a handgun, such person shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. This subsection shall not apply to any transfer made (i) between family members, (ii) for the purpose of engaging in a sporting event or activity or (iii) in connection with circumstances set forth in subdivisions 1 through 4 of § 18.2-308.7.
