SUMMARY:

Prisons; inmate programs. Allows the use of inmate labor for public works projects via agreements with nonprofit organizations as well as allowing the Department of Correctional Education to enter into agreements with nonprofit civic organizations for the provision of services. Inmates currently can be used to provide labor to state agencies, counties, cities, towns or local commissions in the performance of public works as approved by the Director of the Department of Corrections. The bill also provides that the locality in which such projects will take place and the victim must be notified.

This bill is identical to HB 538.
