(Proposed by the Senate Committee on Local Government
on January 30, 1996)
(Patron Prior to Substitute--Senator Norment)
A BILL to amend Chapter 393 of the Acts of Assembly of 1932, which provided a charter for the City of Williamsburg, by adding a section numbered 22.4, relating to the office of sheriff.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That Chapter 393 of the Acts of Assembly of 1932 is amended by adding a section numbered 22.4 as follows:

§ 22.4. Additional powers; consolidation of sheriff's office.

The city council may, in concurrence with the board of supervisors of James City County, petition the circuit court asking that a referendum be held in accordance with the provisions of § 15.1-40.2 of the Code of Virginia on the question of whether the two localities may share the office of sheriff; provided, rather than by a petition of qualified voters, the petition may be initiated by the two governing bodies upon the written concurrence of the sheriffs of James City County and the City of Williamsburg and following a public hearing and adoption by each governing body of a resolution in favor of the consolidation of the two offices.
