Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That Chapter 393 of the Acts of Assembly of 1932 is amended by adding a section numbered 22.4 as follows:

§ 22.4. Additional powers; consolidation of sheriff's office.

The city council may, in concurrence with the board of supervisors of James City County, petition the circuit court asking that a referendum be held in accordance with the provisions of § 15.1-40.2 of the Code of Virginia on the question of whether the two localities may share the office of sheriff; however, the petition may be initiated by the two governing bodies rather than by a petition of qualified voters.
