1996 SESSION
963003368Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 17-111.8 as follows:
§ 17-111.8. Annual report of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court shall publish annually by July 1 of each year a report which details the activities of the Commonwealth's courts including:
1. Caseload statistics for each circuit and district, and for the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court;
2. A summary breakdown of all petitions filed in the Supreme Court and the disposition of those petitions including, but not limited to, petitions filed, petitions granted, petitions refused indicating specific reasons for refusals such as procedural deficiencies in filing, cases certified from the Court of Appeals, petitions withdrawn prior to action, cases decided by opinion, cases decided by order, disposition of petitions for rehearing, and all other orders such as the qualification of attorneys or the appointment of counsel;
3. A summary breakdown of all cases filed in the Court of Appeals and the disposition of those cases including, but not limited to, the number of criminal, domestic relations, workers' compensation, administrative agency, and original jurisdiction cases; the number of cases disposed of by opinion, the number of cases disposed of by order; and the number of published and nonpublished opinions;
4. An overview of the entire court system, the individual courts and other court-related activities;
5. Actions of each of the judicial policy-making bodies;
6. Expenditure and revenue data for each court level;
7. Personnel salary and classification data for the district courts and the magistrate system; and
8. A listing of all justices and judges and their terms of office.
2. That the provisions of Chapter 6 of the 1995 Acts of Assembly prohibiting the general publication and distribution of annual reports by state agencies shall not apply to the annual report required to be filed under this Act.
3. That the provisions of this act shall apply to annual reports for calendar year 1994 and thereafter.
