1995 SESSION
HJ 544 Study; early school dismissals.
Introduced by: Shirley F. Cooper | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles
SUMMARY:
Early school dismissals. Requests the Board of Education to establish and implement guidelines for local school boards on early school dismissals. Often public schools must close during the school day without advance notice to parents due to inclement or severe weather conditions, power failures, and emergencies. This poses a health and safety problem for young children who are sent home and spend long hours alone without adult supervision because their parents work during the day. Frequently, parents are unable to leave work, or make alternative arrangements for the care of their children. The Board is requested to consider in its deliberations a process for notifying parents of early school closings, the impact on school bus transportation, and appropriate alternatives to caring for children until they can be taken home safely.
