051386726Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 47.1-12 of the Code of Virginia is amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 47.1-12. Powers.
Each notary shall be empowered to (i) take acknowledgments,;
(ii) administer oaths,;
(iii) certify that a copy of any document, other than a document in the custody
of a court, is a true copy thereof,;
(iv) certify affidavits or depositions of witnesses,;
and (v) perform such other acts as may be specifically permitted by law.
Each notary shall keep an official seal that is the exclusive property of the notary. The seal shall not be possessed or used by any other person and shall not be surrendered to an employer upon termination of employment. Near the notary's official signature on any notarized document, the notary shall affix a legible, permanent and photographically reproducible image of the official seal that shall include the notary's name exactly as indicated on the commission and the words "notary public," "Commonwealth of Virginia," and "My commission expires" followed by appropriate space to indicate the exact date on which the commission expires.
