WHEREAS, citizens of the Commonwealth, as customers, consumers, employees, stockholders, suppliers, and communities, all contribute significantly to corporate success or are affected significantly by corporate actions; and

WHEREAS, many corporations, on a daily basis, exercise their corporate responsibilities in ways beneficial to their employees and the communities in which they are located, to groups and individuals with specific needs, and to the social and environmental fabric of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, there has been renewed attention to the impact of corporate practices upon the health and well-being of communities and the environment; and,

WHEREAS, there are many examples of how the practice of corporate citizenship results in prosperous corporate and business success, and the concept of corporate citizenship is being recognized as a tenet of good business practice; and

WHEREAS, corporations may, from time to time, seek contracts, tax abatements, incentives, or industrial development bonds, or engage in other activities that involve the direct payment of funds of the Commonwealth to them; and,

WHEREAS, the Global Sullivan Principles ask companies to support universal human rights, promote equal opportunity, respect employee freedom of association, provide safe and healthy workplaces, promote fair competition, and improve the quality of life in their communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby express its endorsement of the Global Sullivan Principles; and be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, that the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the Virginia Chamber of Commerce so that the business community of the Commonwealth will be apprised of the sense of the Virginia General Assembly.
