SUMMARY:

Election of governing body in certain towns. Provides for May 1996 municipal elections in towns which have been redistricted prior to February 1, 1996, as a result of an annexation and delays the May election if such towns do not receive preclearance by the U.S. Attorney General prior to April 23, 1996. The terms of existing council members shall be extended as needed. The intent of the bill is to give the residents of newly annexed areas an opportunity to vote in the 1996 town elections.
