        The terms "because of sexual orientation or gender identity" or "on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity" or terms of similar import when used in reference to discrimination in the Code and acts of the General Assembly shall not be construed to bar any religious or denominational institution or organization, or any organization operated for charitable or educational purposes, which is operated, supervised or controlled by or in connection with a religious organization, from limiting employment or sales, rental, or occupancy of housing accommodations or admission to or giving preference to persons of the same religion or denomination or from taking such action as is calculated by such organization to promote the religious principles for which it is established or maintained. Nor shall such terms be construed to allow a public body or contracting agency to deny a contract to or terminate a contract with such organization because of the organization's adherence to the religious principles for which it is established or maintained.
