WHEREAS, Jason Pittman, a science focus teacher at Hollin Meadows Science and Math Focus School in Fairfax County, was selected by the National Science Teachers Association as a recipient of a prestigious 2011 Zula International-National Science Teachers Association Early Science Educator Award; and

WHEREAS, the Zula International-National Science Teachers Association Early Science Educator Award, part of the National Science Teachers Association Teacher Awards Program, is given to two preK through second grade teachers who use innovative and inquiry-based science education methods to enhance science learning in the classroom; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, Jason Pittman designed websites and founded an Internet startup before going back to school at James Madison University to receive a master’s degree in education; and

WHEREAS, a creative and resourceful teacher, Jason Pittman helps students develop an interest in and knowledge of science by engaging students in authentic learning activities in outdoor classroom areas, including a school garden and science lab; and

WHEREAS, Jason Pittman also arranges for professional meteorologists, geologists, and scientists to visit the classroom and helps with the school’s daily weather forecast, Science/Math Focus Night, and the annual science fair in addition to running the school’s website and the Science Lab website; and

WHEREAS, Jason Pittman epitomizes the vital role that caring and involved teachers play in students’ lives as they prepare a rising generation to become the leaders of tomorrow; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Jason Pittman for his selection as a 2011 Zula International-National Science Teachers Association Early Science Educator Award recipient; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jason Pittman as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and gratitude for his commitment to making the world of science interesting and understandable to the youth of Fairfax County.
