2000 SESSION
WHEREAS, Donald A. McGlothlin, Sr., a former member of both the Senate of Virginia and the House of Delegates, died on February 20, 2000; and
WHEREAS, a native of Russell County, Donald McGlothlin was an officer in the United States Army and the United States Navy, was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, and continued to serve as a commanding officer in the United States Army Reserve; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College and the Marshall-Wythe School of Law of The College of William and Mary in Virginia, Donald McGlothlin was the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Buchanan County from 1956 to 1964; and
WHEREAS, Donald McGlothlin won election to the Senate in 1964 and in 1968 was elected to the House of Delegates, where he served with great distinction from 1968 to 1990; and
WHEREAS, during his 22-year career in the House of Delegates, Donald McGlothlin became one of Virginia’s most influential legislators, serving as chairman of the House Roads and Internal Navigation Committee and the Mining and Mineral Resources Committee; and
WHEREAS, Donald McGlothlin was active on the local level, serving as president of the Buchanan County Industrial Development Authority, the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce, and the Buchanan County Bar Association; and
WHEREAS, a man of strong views and colorful disposition, Donald McGlothlin served his community, the Commonwealth, and the nation as a military officer, lawyer, teacher, coach, farmer, and legislator; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a singular figure in recent Virginia history, Donald A. McGlothlin, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Donald A. McGlothlin, Sr., as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
