SUMMARY AS PASSED: (all summaries)

Study; renovation of school buses. Directs the subcommittees on public safety of the Senate Committee on Finance and the House Committee on Appropriations to study the renovation of school buses by Virginia’s correctional institutions. The subcommittees are requested to determine the number of school buses in the state requiring repair and renovation; identify the types of repairs necessary; estimate the costs of contracting for such work with the private sector and correctional institutions; and seek the participation and comment of local school divisions regarding this approach to repairing school buses. Joint ventures of this type between local school divisions and correctional institutions would help conserve limited resources, protect children, and provide productive opportunities for inmates with the requisite skills to use and perfect them while incarcerated so that they may find gainful employment upon their release.
