SUMMARY AS PASSED: (all summaries)

Accelerated degree programs in information systems. Encourages public institutions of higher education to offer accelerated degree programs in theinformation systems field to prepare nontraditional students for employment in the industry. It is noted that there are many high-paying, high-tech jobs in the information systems industry in Virginia which remain unfilled due to the lack of trained and skilled persons for the information systems field. Maximizing the use of the distance learning technology would enable institutions to offer such programs collaboratively and provide students access to eminent faculty in the field, courses, and lectures. An accelerated degree program would reduce the amount of time and money required of such students to complete the degree program and facilitate the production of qualified and skilled workers for the information systems industry. The Chairman and Director of the State Council of Higher Education, the boards of visitors, and the presidents of the respective institutions are requested to encourage this type of collaboration among institutions.
