SUMMARY AS PASSED SENATE:
Operation of unsafe vehicles. Prohibits operation of any motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer with defective brakes, tires, wheels, or steering mechanism that is likely to cause an accident. Violations discovered through “out-of-service” inspections are to be punished by (i) a one-year driver’s license suspension and/or a fine up to $2,500 for a first offense, a fine up to $5,000 for a second or subsequent offense.
SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:
Operation of unsafe vehicles. Prohibits operation of any motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer with defective brakes, tires, wheels, steering mechanism, or any other condition which is likely to cause an accident or a breakdown. Violations discovered through “out-of-service” inspections are to be punished by (i) a $10,000 fine, (ii) a one-year driver’s license suspension, and (iii) a one-year commercial driver’s license disqualification.
