SUMMARY AS PASSED:

Vocational education. Directs the Board of Education to incorporate into vocational education the Standards of Learning in mathematics, English, science, and social studies, and other subjects as appropriate. The bill also establishes, with such funds as may be appropriated for such purpose, within the Department of Education a unit of specialists in vocational education. The unit is to assist in developing and revising the vocational education curriculum to incorporate the Standards of Learning, provide professional development for vocational education teachers, make site visits, and seek the input of business and industry representatives regarding vocational education programs in public schools. This measure is identical to HB 2476.

SUMMARY AS PASSED SENATE:

Agricultural education; coordinators. Directs the Board of Education to develop and establish, with such funds as may be appropriated for such purpose, guidelines for programs of agricultural education in the public schools, incorporating the Standards of Learning for mathematics, science, vocational education, and other subjects areas as may be appropriate. School boards are still empowered to decide whether to offer agricultural education. Only school divisions complying with the Board’s guidelines will be entitled to receive state funding for agricultural education programs.

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:

Agricultural education; coordinators. Directs the Board of Education to develop and establish guidelines for programs of agricultural education in the public schools; however, local school boards retain discretion whether to offer such agricultural education programs. The bill also establishes, with such funds as may be appropriated for such purpose, within the Department of Education, positions for two coordinators of agricultural education. The coordinators are to develop and revise agriculture curriculum to incorporate the Standards of Learning, conduct workshops, make site visits, and seek the input of agricultural industry representatives regarding agricultural education programs in public schools.
