SUMMARY AS PASSED: (all summaries)

Community-Based Intervention Program for Suspended and Expelled Students. Establishes, with such funds as may be appropriated for these purposes, the Community-Based Intervention Program for Suspended and Expelled Students to provide interim instruction, intervention, and supervision for students in the public schools who have been suspended, excluded, or expelled from regular school attendance; recommended for the Program or ordered into the Program by a court; or enrolled by the parent. The Program shall consist of five regional projects. Priority for awarding grants shall be given to nonprofit, tax-exempt public or private organizations whose projects are designed to serve students who have been removed from regular school attendance. Criteria for the projects include a structured and balanced educational program that accommodates the specific needs of the students, licensed or otherwise qualified teachers, and joint ventures with business and industry for vocational training and apprenticeships. This bill is a recommendation of the Joint Subcommittee Studying the Status and Needs of African-American Males.
