1999 SESSION
WHEREAS, on September 10, 1998, Harold L. “Butch” Miller, a longtime member of American Legion Post 364 in Woodbridge, was installed as American Legion National Commander at the Legion’s annual convention in New Orleans; and
WHEREAS, comprised of some three million members, the American Legion is the world’s largest veterans’ organization, and Butch Miller is only the third Virginian to hold the prestigious position of National Commander; and
WHEREAS, following service in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1974 in which he served in the Pacific and in Vietnam, Butch Miller also worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs for more than 20 years assisting the nation’s veterans and their families; and
WHEREAS, a member of the American Legion since 1972, Butch Miller joined Woodbridge Post 364 in 1978, was elected Post Commander in 1988-89, and was named Post Commander of the Year for the Department of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Butch Miller’s dedication and commitment to veterans’ issues and to the American Legion led him to a series of positions with the Legion at the district, state, and national levels; and
WHEREAS, Butch Miller served as District Adjutant and District Commander and as Department Judge Advocate and Department Commander for the Department of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Butch Miller has been a delegate to every American Legion national convention since 1990 and has served as chairman of the National Constitution and Bylaws Committee and as consultant to the National Legislative Commission; and
WHEREAS, his richly deserved election to the position of National Commander of the American Legion caps a long and distinguished career of service to the nation’s veterans and to the organization that represents them so effectively; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, That the Senate of Virginia congratulate Harold L. “Butch” Miller on his selection as National Commander of the American Legion; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Harold L. “Butch” Miller as an expression of the Senate's admiration for his many and notable achievements on behalf of America’s veterans.
