WHEREAS, Shelton Earl Dunning, an employee of NationsBank in Bon Air and a man widely admired for his many activities, died a hero on February 17, 1999, protecting the lives of his co-workers and the public; and

WHEREAS, Shelton Dunning was a native of Chicago and a retired sergeant first class in the U.S. Army, in which he served for 20 years; and

WHEREAS, Shelton Dunning received numerous military awards and decorations throughout his career, including the Commendation Medal (2-OLC), Army Achievement Medal (3-OLC), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with One Bronze Star, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Noncommissioned Officer’s Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 3; and

WHEREAS, Shelton Dunning also received the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Master Parachutist Badge with Combat Distinguishing Device, One Bronze Service Star, Air Assault Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge with Operator-S Bar, Parachute Rigger Badge, Royal Australian Army Parachutist Badge, Brazil Parachutist Badge, and the Jordanian Parachutist Badge; and

WHEREAS, Shelton Dunning was a member of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Petersburg and was well known throughout the community for his athletic ability and his willingness to help others; and

WHEREAS, Shelton Dunning was an avid football and softball player, having played both sports in the Army; and

WHEREAS, after leaving the Army, Shelton Dunning continued to play softball as a center fielder for the Mattress and Springs softball team; and

WHEREAS, a man of significant and lasting accomplishment, Shelton Earl Dunning was a kind friend and a warm-hearted and giving man who left his mark on the profession he pursued so successfully and on the community he served so faithfully; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a singularly successful and valuable citizen of the Commonwealth, Shelton Earl Dunning; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Shelton Earl Dunning as an expression of the General Assembly’s great respect for his memory.
