SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 552
On the death of Cynthia Yvette Ivey Williamson.

WHEREAS, Cynthia Yvette Ivey Williamson of Newport News, who pursued a successful professional nursing career while devoting substantial time and energy to community-service activities, died on May 23, 1997; and

WHEREAS, a native of Newport News, Cynthia Williamson graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1969 and earned an associate of science degree from Norfolk State University and a bachelor of science degree from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University); and

WHEREAS, Cynthia Williamson continued her professional education, receiving a master of science degree in nursing administration and a post-graduate certificate as a family nurse practitioner; and

WHEREAS, during her professional career, Cynthia Williamson worked at Whittaker Memorial Hospital in Newport News, the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hampton, and the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Cynthia Williamson gave selflessly of her time and talents to a wide variety of community-service organizations, chairing the board of directors of the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, serving on the advisory board of the Elizabeth Project Council on Infant Mortality and Teenage Pregnancy, and serving as a member of the Peninsula Minority Cancer Task Force; and

WHEREAS, Cynthia Williamson was a member of the National Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Association; and

WHEREAS, active in the Ivy Baptist Church in Newport News, Cynthia Williamson served on the Christian Board of Education, was a member of the Senior Choir, and established a health program, the Blood Pressure Ministry, at the church; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and accomplished professional, Cynthia Williamson leaves a lasting legacy of service to her profession, her church, and her community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the untimely loss of an exceptional Virginian, Cynthia Yvette Ivey Williamson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Cynthia Yvette Ivey Williamson as an expression of the respect in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
